Sunday School is a vital ministry of our congregation. Over one-hundred children gather each Sunday at Prince of Peace to learn God's Word and grow in their faith in Christ. The Christian friendship, nurture and support they receive through our congregation are a living testimony to God's power and love in their lives which they will never forget. To participate in Sunday School, a child must be at least three years old by the beginning of the school year. Classes are available for all age groups, including the regular adult class for people in college or older. Our High School class typically attracts more than twenty youths per Sunday. They undertake service projects and participate in fun and fellowship events on a regular basis. Their Sunday class revolves around Bible study and discussion of current youth issues from the standpoint of Christian faith. All children Pre-K through 4th grade meet in our Old (West) Fellowship Hall for Sunday School Opening at 10:15 a.m. At 10:25 they disperse to their regular classes. Older groups go directly to their classrooms at 10:15 a.m.
At Prince of Peace, we offer formal instruction to our youths in the meaning and practice of Holy Communion when they are in fifth grade, although kids of all ages are welcome if their parents feel they are ready for it. A series of three communion classes is held during the season of Lent (February/March/April). The students receive the Lord's Supper for the first time on Palm Sunday of each year. (Palm Sunday or "Sunday of the Passion" is the Sunday before Easter).
Prince of Peace 7th and 8th graders are strongly encouraged to participate in confirmation instruction. Older youths who have not been confirmed are welcome to join our regular confirmation classes or to set up an alternative study course with the pastor. Confirmation is a two-year program designed to help our children grow in their faith through the study of God's Word. Parental guidance and involvement plays a key role in the process. In 2007-8 we are focusing on the book of Acts, the teachings of Saint Paul and Martin Luther, and discussing how the basic doctrines of our Lutheran Christian heritage apply to our everyday lives. In addition to the "knowledge" component, confirmation helps young people establish good worship, devotional, and study habits which will serve our children well as they face the challenges of life as Christians. Along with their regular homework and service projects, our kids enjoy regular fun and fellowship events throughout the year. Currently we have twenty kids involved in the program. They meet from September through April at 7:00 each Wednesday night with the pastor. If you would like to know more about our confirmation program, please contact Pastor Seth Jersild at 217-469-7422!
